BUHARI SUPPORTS 65-YEAR RETIREMENT AGE FOR TEACHERS - MINISTER OF EDUCATION, ADAMU

December 14, 2018 0
The Minister of Education has said that the president supports the increment of the retirement age for teachers.

Adamu Adamu

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, on Thursday said the Muhammadu Buhari administration was in support of increasing the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years.

The minister made this known at a public hearing on the need to insulate teachers from the retirement age for public servants, organised by the House Joint Committee on Basic Education and Public Service.

The minister said that it was as a means of improving the standard of basic and secondary education in the country.

Adamu informed the house joint committee that the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) had submitted the new retirement age proposal to the ministry and the National Assembly for approval.

He said that the drive was based on the need for better performance by teachers and the desire to have quality teachers in the nation’s schools.

“Nigerian teachers to some extent require a reasonable retirement age like their counterparts in India, Canada, Belgium that have increased the retirement age for teachers to 65 years.

“We are appealing to the House to approve the bill because the ministry is in support of increasing the retirement age of teachers,” he said.

Earlier, the Chairman House Committee on Basic Education, Rep Zakari Mohammed, said that the bill was being considered for passage.

He says the bill seeks to absolve teachers from the public service rule which sets the retirement age for government workers at 60, and set for them a new retirement age of 65.

According to the chairman, teachers are the bedrock of any nation and as such their wealth of experience must be tapped into to enhance the well being of society.

Mohammed said apart from the bill to extend the retirement age for teachers, House also was considering to amend the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria Act to strengthen its regulatory powers to promote professionalism and eradicate quacks.

Also, the Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Public Service, Rep. Adekoya Abdel-Majid, described teachers as professionals who laid the foundation for a nation’s economic, technological and social development.

Abdel-Majid said that the more years a teacher spent on the job, the better he delivered his services to the learners based on experiences gathered over the years and the wisdom of age.

Stakeholders present at the hearing to support the passage of the bills were the Parent Teachers Association (PTA), Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Nigerian Teachers Institute (NTI) and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).

PRESIDENT BUHARI REDUCES THE COST OF JAMB & NECO FORMS (SEE DETAILS)

November 29, 2018 0
President Muhammadu Buhari has approved a reduction in the cost of forms for final year secondary school (NECO) and post-secondary school examinations (JAMB).
While speaking after the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting in State House Abuja on Monday, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari has reduced the cost of forms for some terminal examinations in the country.

He said the examination forms are for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, organised by the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB), the Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Examination Council (NECO), as well as the Basic Education Certificate Examination.
According to Tolu Ogunlesi (@toluogunlesi), the Head of Digital Communications for President Buhari, who shared the news, the reduction will take effect from January 2019.
He tweeted, “President Buhari has approved the reduction in the cost of Forms for JAMB UTME, NECO SSCE and the Basic Education Certificate Examination. With effect from January 2019, the cost of JAMB UTME Form will drop from N5,000 to N3,500. NECO will drop from N11,350 to N9,850.
“Minister of Education Adamu Adamu announced this just now at today’s #FECBrief. He said President Buhari directed the Ministry to look into the reduction following the significant improvement in revenues being remitted to the Treasury by the Education Agencies.
“The Exam Agencies are not meant to be revenue generating bodies, they’re only supposed to cover costs/operating expenses. The sharp increase in remittances by JAMB(from less than N60m in 2010–2016 to >N15 BILLION in 2017/18) have shown that the fees being charged could be reduced.”

Shatta Wale Is A Huge Disappointment To Upcoming Dancehall Artist - Split

Fast-rising Ghanaian Dancehall artist, Splitt has spit fire on the self-acclaimed Dancehall King, Shatta Wale for failing to represent the Dancehall artists in Ghana well on BBC Radio 1Xtra when he was hosted over the weekend.
Shatta Wale’s freestyle is one of the wackest freestyle ever to come from such an ace artist from Ghana on such a huge platform as the BBC Radio 1Xtra.
The freestyle lack content and it was poorly delivered and it has raised a lot of controversies with many people bashing Shatta Wale for such a poor performance compared to when Stonebwoy and Sarkodie performed when they got the same opportunity.
Speaking to Ghpage.com, Splitt who is set to launch his maiden album, “Over Star” said he was very surprised when he saw the video of Shatta Wale giving such weak punches considering his status and the kind love Ghanaians including him has for his craft.
Splitt
“I was extremely surprised when I saw a video of him ‘freestyling’ on BBC radio. I mean Shatta Wale is a full-time professional artist and with his over-a-decade experience in the music industry, much is expected of him”, Splitt said.
“I understand it was a freestyle so probably he didn’t prepare for it but as a commercial artist, a dancehall artist for that matter, a freestyle should not be a problem for you, anytime, any day.”
Splitt expressed his worry about how his poor performance will affect the upcoming artist whose genre is Dancehall
“So if a big brand like Shatta Wale presented Ghanaian music to the world in this manner, then what will they think about the rest of us?” the worry rising artist, Splitt asked.
The young artist revealed his major surprise after the wack BBC freestyle from Shatta Wale was when he went on social media to throw tantrums because people were criticizing him.

I WILL CAMPAIGN WITH ALL MY POWER FOR SANWO-OLU AND BUHARI – AMBODE SPEAKS

October 24, 2018 0
Akinwunmi Ambode, governor of Lagos state, has promised to lead a strong campaign for the victory for President Muhammadu Buhari and Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governorship candidate of the the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
Addressing reporters at the presidential wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport shortly after he accompanied Buhari to perform the official commissioning of the new Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Seme-Krake joint border post in Badagry, Ambode said it is important for the APC to retain its leadership positions both at the federal and state levels.
“I have just accompanied Mr President to the Nigerian-Benin Border Post. So what we have commissioned today is a joint Border Patrol post between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin and it is called Semo-Krake Border Post,” he said.
“But again, just to also use this opportunity to let Lagosians know that we are heavily committed to the re-election of Mr. President and you can see that his continuous visit to Lagos reiterates the fact that he is actually a lover of Lagos state and I am committed to ensuring his re-election.
“We are going to campaign heavily for him. I am also committed to ensuring that the APC wins the governorship election come 2019. We support the candidacy of Babajide Sanwo-Olu and we would make sure that APC retains Lagos State and the centre.”
Sanwo-Olu defeated Ambode at the primary election which held earlier in the month.
Earlier, Ambode had received Buhari at the airport before the duo proceeded to Seme where the president joined his Republic of Benin counterpart, Patrice Talon, to inaugurate the border post.
Seme-Krake joint border is one of the busiest boundary lines not only in West Africa but on the whole continent.
On a daily basis, it records huge movement of persons, goods and services.
The border post is expected to enhance the free movement of persons and goods in the region and foster integration between Nigerians and citizens of Benin.

2019: What Akpabio’s defection did to PDP – Essien

August 16, 2018 0

A former Minister of Lands and Housing, Chief Nduese Essien has admitted that the recent defection of Senator Godswill Akpbabio from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC reduced the strength of the PDP.

He, however, said the former governor’s action will not affect the victory of the state governor and the PDP in 2019, adding that Akpabio only left with few supporters.

The former Minister told Vanguard that the former governor and Senate Minority Leader erred in his defection to the APC.

Essien, who is the political leader of the Eket Senatorial District said, “What I can say is that the incumbent governor is sure to win election because Akwa Ibom has always been a PDP state for 19 years now.

“The exit of the former governor of the party has only altered the strength of the party in the state minimally because at the time he left the party, his influence and popularity had waned.

“In the past 18 months people in the state had become disenchanted with his leadership role in the Senate. He was no longer the vocal politician that we knew. He was not playing a pivotal role as senate minority leader.

“People would become doubtful of the strength of his character as a leader, that is why most of his supporters could not go with him to his new political abode.

“His entry into his new abode is going to destabilize the place, because he is going to meet the very people who ran away from him.

“The APC in Akwa Ibom is populated by people who were avoiding him and so his going to join them there is going to be marriage of strange bedfellows.

“A lot of them have indicated individual intention to abandon the party for him and return to the PDP.”

2019: Saraki reveals why he is considering running against Buhari

August 16, 2018 0

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has admitted he is considering running against President Muhammadu Buhari in next year’s general elections.

Saraki, who recently defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stated this in an interview with Bloomberg on Tuesday in Abuja.

In the last one week, the Senate President has visited ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Military President, Ibrahim Babangida.

“I am consulting and actively considering it. I believe I can make the change.

“The PDP has learnt its lesson from the loss in 2015, and I think unfortunately the APC did not learn from their victory.

“While negotiating with the PDP, we listed a number of issues. We talked about how to sustain and improve the fight against corruption; the issue of providing more powers to the states; inclusion and having a more nationalistic approach on things we do; to continue to improve the environment that will ensure investments.

“We listed a number of items during the discussions with the PDP, and there is a written agreement to that. We trust that we can hold them to that.

“We would ensure that the party is strong on security. The APC too have not done well on the issue of security. We have the opportunity with the right kind of presidential candidate and president to provide the leadership for the party. The party has a good opportunity to lead the country in the right direction,” Saraki said.

EFCC speaks on reported secret deal with Saraki

August 13, 2018 0

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has responded to an allegation by Femi Ojudu, President Muhammadu Buhari’s political adviser, that it and other security agencies were secretly working for the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

In an article on Friday, Ojudu insinuated that Saraki had been working with retired General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services (DSS) and the EFCC.

Reacting, EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, in a statement on Sunday, dismissed the claim.

It read in part: “The Commission takes exception at the attempt to impute false motive to its investigative activities.

“The recent placement of a ‘Post No Debit Order’ on some accounts in Benue and Akwa Ibom States were the culmination of many months of painstaking investigation activities. To reduce such activities to the level of a stunt in a real or imaginary script by any politician is outrageous.

“It is important to state that the EFCC is NOT a party to the so called script by Saraki. Members of the public should disregard the innuendo in Ojudu’s article as it is unfounded.
