Luis Suarez has blasted Antoine Griezmann to stop pretending to be Uruguayan after the France forward decision not to celebrate his World Cup quarter-final goal out of respect for La Celeste.
The 27-year-old Atletico Madrid star scored France's second goal after Raphael Varane had given Didier Deschamps' side the lead on Friday in Nizhny Novgorod.
Griezmann later spoke of his 'love' for Uruguay after Les Blues 2-0 victory, which has apparently grown because of his relationship with Atletico Madrid team-mate Diego Godin and former Real Sociedad mentor Martin Lasarte.
Barcelona striker, however, rejected the gesture as hollow given Griezmann’s role in ending his nation’s tournament.
"He’s not Uruguayan, he’s French and he scored a goal.
"He doesn’t know what we have to do to succeed in football. He will have his customs and his Uruguayan way of speaking, but we feel differently.” the Suarez star told reporters.
Griezmann's affection for Uruguay started about a decade ago after making his first division debut in 2009 for Real Sociedad under the direction of Uruguayan coach Martin Lasarte. He also established a close relationship there with Carlos Bueno, another Uruguayan.
It was from Lasarte and Bueno that Griezmann learned how to drink mate. The Frenchman also became a fan of Uruguayan club Penarol and learned the chants sung among its supporters.
When he moved to Atletico, he befriended more Uruguayans: Cristian Rodriguez, then Gimenez, Godin and fitness coach Oscar Ortega.
