Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane can breathe a further sigh of relief after Croatia released Luka Modric from international duty ahead of their friendly fixture against Mexico.
After playing in the defeat to Peru on Saturday, the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was given permission to miss the clash with Mexico in Dallas on Tuesday.
Modric suffered a muscular injury in the first leg against Paris-Saint Germain and didn't make the most recent LaLiga match against Girona after suffering a calf ailment.
Spanish football Newspaper MARCA says the Croatian won't fly to Dallas and will return to Madrid at the beginning of the week, but it's unclear at this time whether or not he will return to Valdebebas or return on the initially planned date.
Croatia's coach, Zlatko Dalic who allowed the playmaker to depart had reportedly had a chat with Zidane at least two weeks prior to the international break to organise this arrangement, although Mateo Kovacic has been permitted to remain with the group.
Ivan Rakitic will stay and play, although Dalic will be without one of his most experienced players. Zidane countered this by arguing that handing Modric the additional period of rest will allow him to arrive at the World Cup in a much better physical state.
